This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.
The couple face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
